Goals for the 2019 Fiscal Year

This is the Anniversary of my website Brownscomicart and I just finished renewing my subscription with WordPress still keeping my Business Account. Which for those that don’t know it is about $299 a year to have a business subscription with WordPress but the good thing with it is you have 24/7 access to support as well as an very unlimited access to premium themes and access to plugins and can upload your own plugin that you may have created or purchased by another developer. So every year as an artist and a Business Man I’m always trying to find ways to do more with my business and to make more in profit instead of just ditching out money to run the business. Currently I’ve probably only made less than $100 in profit just from running the business and that not a bad start, I know and I learn from a lot of bloggers on here that you are always gonna lose money when you start something new and will be spending a lot of money just to get it up and running. So having a good business plan and knowing what your goals will be for the next year is a good way to start. Here are my goals for the 2019 Fiscal Year….

  • Commissions! I will be doing Commissions starting the New Year and I’ve already set up my Commission Page just setting up the Contract Details.
  • Keeping all my Social Media Outlets up-to-date. I will use more Social Media outlets to help with my free advertising.
  • Spending less on operating expenses, tools, and supplies.
  • Making revenue on Google ad-sense ads by keeping my blog updated to increase traffic. Trying to make profit with ads on my blog to pay for the expenses of the blog.
  • Getting Clients and letting subscribers post their art on my blog with their own art gallery.
  • Offering Clients the option to be a premium member where they may be able to create their own profile page and describe who they are and post in the artist tips page giving themselves credit for the post as advertisement for them and there business/Art.
  • Attending more Comic Cons and Business events to interact with the community and other fellow artist to get ideas and share my art and business ideas.
  • Updating my YouTube Channel and creating brief effective tutorials that will help artist and Entrepreneurs on a daily basis.

Thank You for taking the time to read and for being a subscriber to BrownsComicArt! If you feel as if their’s something that I should work on or an idea you have that can help me in the near future than feel free to let me know! All comments and feedback are appreciated! Thank You!

NFTE(Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship)

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, also referred to as NFTE, is an international non-profit organization providing entrepreneurship training and education programs to young people from low-income urban communities. I support and will always encourage young kids to take this course as in school because it will set them up go succeed with their business once they get out and pursue their business fulltime.

NFTE(Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship)

I took the NFTE course when I was in high school senior year and it was one if the best programs I ever took. They teach you the basics of what it takes to be a Entrepreneur and ways you can be successful at it. One of the first things I remember them teaching me about an elevator pitch. Where your trying to in less than 5 mins to describe your product and try to make a sale with it. With an elevator pitch which I will talk about in a later post but you only have time to bring out the most important facts about your product or business. But NFTE is starting to expand now and even if you go to the website www.nfte.com you will read success stories from young adults that took the NFTE course and completed it and are now multimillionaires just from creating and selling a product. There is a lot more to a business than just creating a product or offering a service, business is also about customer service and making wise decisions. If you have kids or are a young student in school right now and your county/school offers this course I encourage you to sign up for it because this is a good start for starting a business and is all free of charge. Not to mention they do a lot of activities that involve famous and real world entrepreneur’s that talk to you answer questions and give advice on what you can do to make your business more of a success.   I’ll have a article on my artist and business tools page soon talking about the NFTE programs and I’ll be giving a little more background information on them and the success stories of people that joined this program. As well as events you can attend too to show your support for upcoming Entrepreneurs. Thank you for reading and remember its never to late to start your own business.

Beware the dangers of Fan Art!

Eagle-Man & Artic Cover

As most of us no we can’t sell or publish any artwork that isn’t ours without given permission. Which in most cases you will always want it to be written down on paper in the form of a contract, just to be safer than sorry. The reason is because you don’t want a legal issue coming up saying you were stealing someone else work. In the art field you have to be very careful of this because the companies of big fan art like with Marvel and DC Comics are high on people that try to sell there work without permission.

I bring this topic up again because recently I had tried to sell a drawing I created of Spider-man, Mary Jane, and Black Cat in full color with Adobe Photoshop. Now I have this drawing already on this site and other social blogs, but I had recently tried putting it on a site called www.redbubble.com.

Redbubble is a website where you can submit art and they will display your art on things like blankets, cups, phone cases, beach towels, Canvas, etc. Now with that if you upload your drawing and lets say someone buys a phone case with your artwork on it they will give you a percentage of the profit from what they make from the product. Now when I first did this I didn’t realize that Marvel was going to be looking out for fan art like this on other sites like redbubble.

I get a email saying my content was taken down because it had copyright violations. Guess who wrote the complaint. Marvel of course. So I researched it because I felt as if well I’m not really trying to make a profit from this I’m just designing new artwork and wanted to see how it would look on a phone case and other products. But according to the law unless I have written permission I can’t sell any fan art. Now its funny because you have to know the game to play it because from what I’ve researched and from what I’ve seen sometimes if you’ve done work for the company like Marvel or DC comics at Comic Cons they will sometimes let the artist sell fan art without any given permission.

I have seen in other places fan art sold like Batman, Super-Man, Flash, etc, on websites and at Comic cons. Now one thing I can say is for example lets say someone is selling a few drawings of fan art for lets say less than $100 worth of drawings, well the chances are Marvel isn’t going to spend the time, money, or resources to have a lawyer go out to either give a warning or sue for $100 worth or artwork. You know big comic book companies like Marvel, DC Comics, Top Cow, the hole comic book industry is coming down harder on this as more people are profiting off their work on a big scale. So when I think of it I understand why these comic book companies are becoming so strict because its their work and if they do let you sell something that is from their work they expect to see a profit to as it is their creation. You are just using it to make another creation. So before considering to draw fan art do your research and read all the rules on sites like redbubble, DeviantArt, etc. Always when creating something that isn’t your idea make sure you understand the copyright laws before attempting to sell. What you see above it my own in that can be found in my Art gallery Pencil&ink Gallery Page.

Remember its not illegal to draw or post Fan Art, its just illegal to try to sell as a profit that’s actually called stealing. I will be posting a artist tip talking about the warning of fan art and why its sometimes better to just go with your own design and artwork. Thanks for reading stay tuned for more updates.

Invest wisely when it comes to Business

There was a time before that I use to make YouTube videos as a way as to help other learn how to use programs like Photoshop CS6 as it is a very advanced program and can sometimes be a little difficult to use. Now at the time when I was first doing this I didn’t know and realize that when you make these types of videos that you need the proper equipment to make them as good as possible. When I say that I’m also referring to like the camera you may need or the microphone you use to do the video. The problem I ran into a lot was the sound and at the time the equipment that I was using the microphone more so I was using wasn’t a good quality microphone. So when I was speaking into it it wasn’t like a lot of these professional type microphones that we have today where the sound is picking up everything. To be honest with you I probably at most paid only $10 for the microphone and it was made more so with chatting on web cam online for the PC, but it wasn’t made for doing professional video recording. So when it comes to certain things business and professional wise you have to invest wisely in the tools you use for it. Below is a picture I took of some microphones that are available at Best Buy and these are good for doing live prod-cast as well as making videos for YouTube channels. If your making a video for like video game play then this too is all a big help for users. I will be posting more of these tips in my Artist Tips page and Business Tools page. Thank you for reading and below are only a few of the good quality microphones you can buy to make your professional videos, I will be posting in the Artist Tips page an updated list of stores you can get good quality equipment!

Promoting is the key. Why is it very valuable?

Now I’ve blogged many post on things like the benefits to social media, using as many sites as possible, and making sure to take advantage of using a logo for your business. All of these can be also considered as promoting your business. Promoting your business especially when your trying to sell a product is very important because unless you are very well known or your popularity is high and you already have good business sells then you need a way to get known and recognized. Promoting in a way is a form of advertising and when promoting remember you still want to do so with as many free assets you have access too. Never be afraid to promote your business because it does pay off. Its just like with our websites/blogs, we have to promote our websites so people will find out and read our profile. If you have a ad-sense account for ads you know what I mean because it is based on clicks and traffic. So in order to make revenue you need to promote yourself so you can build traffic and start to make some business. I’ll be posting soon in my Business Tools page ways to help promote you business. Thanks for Reading!

LinkedIn. Should you create an Account?

Well, for those who haven’t heard of LinkedIn or don’t know what it is it’s a business and employee-oriented service that operators via websites and mobile apps. Its mostly used for professional networking where employers can post jobs and job seekers posting their CVs. You can download the LinkedIn app either on the Googleplay Store or Apple iTunes Store.

It also gives you the ability to create your own profile and resúme. That is the reason why I believe you should create a LinkedIn account because it free and it gives the ability for people to find you and know your skills and capabilities. This is just not for owning a business it’s also for individual people trying to build their profile in reference to building there own career.

When you do create an account you want to add as much work as you done over your entire career. Don’t hold anything back make sure to put all the experience you have an even example of your work. The more you gave the better, people will like what they see and you want to write and make it as professional as possible. That’s another reason why having a blog is a good thing too so people have something to go back on.

In this world today you can always find work and make a descent pay it just takes the right employer to find us. And you also have to put yourself out there and show that this is the career you want. I’ll have a artist tip page soon on this subject but I just wanted to post this as advice for the benefits of using LinkedIn. Thanks for reading and I’d like to hear your thoughts!

Contracts? Why so Important?

A contract is a promise or set of promises that are legally enforceable and, if violated, allow the injured party access to legal remedies. As most of us know we must sign a contract when getting a hired for a job and usually it’s a lot of legal documentation. That documentation is very important and is usually always very detailed with the can and cannot’s of the work or work to be performed. It’s very important for a individual as well as a company because contracts can save you a lot of time as well as money; and provide insurance for you as well. For example, let’s say your an artist doing some work for a client and they agreed verbally to pay you once the job is completed and let’s say you get 85% done with the project and they pull out at the last minute. Well, now you’ve probably used a lot of money and spent a lot of time doing work for someone that just pulls out at the last minute and now doesn’t want to pay you for the time spent already.

So with a contract you can write down your own rules like depending on how much of the job is completed you still have to pay the full amount because your time is valuable especially when it comes to business. When you make a verbal agreement remember it will be harder to prove that you all ever had an agreement. Even in court. So having everything down in paper and even making a copy of it is always the best solution. Always keep the contracts in your file and never throw them away, you never know when or if you may ever need them again. Please note, that if you have a good lawyer to help you review a contract, then your better off than having a lawyer who doesn’t know the terms of agreement like they should. Also, also questions and thoroughly read all the contact to make sure you know what your getting into before signing anything.  I will be adding this to Business Tools page soon and will have it more broken down in detail describing what you should have on a contract and what to look for before signing one. Thanks for reading and let me know if you have any questions regarding this topic please feel free to ask.
